Meet John

I grew up in a Navy family and came to faith in the ninth grade when a local youth pastor in Annapolis, MD befriended me and shared the gospel with me. It was the first time I heard that salvation is a gift, not something you try to earn by being a good person. My faith grew in the ensuing years—through college, seminary, starting a church in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, and business school.

My wife, Jeanie, and I married after I graduated from business school in the summer of 1997. A fun fact about us is that we never lived in the same state until we were married. We moved to Dallas at the end of that summer.

I spent my first nine-and-a-half years in Dallas working in the marketplace—first for the Boston Consulting Group, and then for HBK Investments. We started attending Watermark in 2005, and I joined the staff as the executive pastor in 2007.

Time has gone by quickly since then. It has been a joy to watch God work in people’s lives. I’ve learned again and again that God can be trusted and depending on him is always the right choice. He is good and he is great. My favorite Bible verse, Proverbs 3:5-7 speaks to this:

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.”

Jeanie and I have five children, four girls and a boy. Marriage and parenting have taught us a lot about love, joy, brokenness, resolving conflict, and learning to say “I’m sorry” and “will you forgive me.”
